I’ve won two stand-up competitions in two weeks! I hate to toot my own horn, but “TOOT!” This time, though, I did have to share first place with Haley Boyle. But sharing first place with another funny lady is no hardship. Not only is Haley very, very funny but she can also lift me which made me feel like a dainty flower (for one of the first times in my life). If she’s my company, then I’m in good shape. We won a little cash, we get to do a set somewhere else and honestly, it’s just nice to know that I’m not the only won (pun intended) who thinks my jokes are funny. I want to thank everyone who came out to the show. Super fun!
I’m doing 2.. count ’em, 2! stand up shows this month. And, both are (wait for it)…. competitions! I feel like I’m ready to compete for big prizes! The first is at The Ha Ha Cafe on Monday, June 20th @ 8:00pm. The second is at the Hollywood Studio and Bar on Tuesday, June 28 @ 9:00pm. You can get more info here.
This weekend my production crew shot a short I wrote as a sidebar to the film I am producing, Olive and Mocha. In the short “Olive and Mocha: Fast Times at Sugar High”, we see our heroines as young girls in the 80’s. I’m so excited about how everything turned out. As you can see by the pictures, the production design on set was amazing. A big thank you to the cast and crew who worked like champions and made something great! Stay tuned for the finished short.
Last week I was in NYC to produce Mary Birdsong’s one woman show: “3 Days in the Tub.” We got some props from Timeout NYC: time out ny – critics’ pick And a few bloggers: www.ControlGeek.net – At Joe’s Pub last night, I saw the remarkable Mary Birdsong‘s new piece 3 Days in the Tub. It’s rough (I think this was only the second time the piece was in front of an audience) but there’s a lot of rich material there, and Birdsong is a prolifically creative, remarkably multi-talented tour de force, singing, acting, and impersonating everyone from her own mother to Judy Garland. Joe McGinty, who I’ve seen about 1000 times in the Losers Lounge (lots of my Losers photos here) was in the band, which was excellent. Birdsong is a great singer, and I hope she will add more music to the show, and I hope that this piece (with a bit of shaping) will find a future life. www.beaconpass.com – I have a feeling that if your mother sat in a bathtub, fully clothed, for three days, you too would have a lot of material. You’ve probably seen Mary Birdsong before — as a correspondent on the Daily Show, or as Deputy Kimball on RENO 911. Named by The Hollywood Reporter as one of “Hollywood’s Top 10 Talents on the Rise” and having just been presented with a Theatre World Award, it’s only a matter of time before Birdsong becomes a household name. If you weren’t lucky enough to catch Birdsong’s recent New York romps — including Nora Ephron’s Love, Loss, & What I Wore and Tales of the City – then do yourself a favor and see her newest treasure, which combines comedy and live music with unbelievable family dysfunction. Don’t miss it, fool!
Mary Birdsong’s one woman show: 3 Days in a Tub: A MAMA DRAMA performed by Mary Birdsong Is coming to NYC for one night only!!!! Tuesday, January 18th @ 7:30 pm For tickets call 212.967.7555 or go to www.joespub.com I have helped Mary put this show together and I am running tech the night of. I would love to see any and all of you who live in NYC! Come out, laugh and buy me a drink after the show! Show Description Mary Birdsong tells true stories about her crazy southern mama who, while reclining in the bathtub with no water in it, fully dressed, for 3 days, used her super-human manipulative powers to hold her daughter hostage. Will Mary come up with enough reasons why she shouldn’t just leave poor mama there? Will Mary still make it to that award ceremony in time to collect her coveted award? Through the art of storytelling, and a bunch of really great rock songs performed live with a kick-ass band, Mary will forever change your idea of what a “nice long bath” can be. 3 DAYS IN THE TUB: A MAMA DRAMA Why is Mary’s mom still in that tub? What’s Agatha Christie doing in there with her? And what’s that smell? If you have a southern belle matriarch in your tub, this is the show for you. Starring (& written by) Mary Birdsong Directed by Eric Gilliland Created by Mary Birdsong & Eric Gilliland MARY BIRDSONG was voted one of “Hollywood’s Top 10 Talents On The Rise” by the Hollywood Reporter, and in her latest solo show (“3 Days In The Tub: A Mama Drama”) her high precision, lightning-fast, multicharacter transformations will make it clear she’s earned that honor and then some.
USS Rock N Roll worked on a TV show based on the improv sets we were doing at The iO West Theater. The premise of the show was that we would record the sets we were doing and then transcribe them, punch them up and turn them into a half hour show. We rented out a green screen studio and shot on a budget we raised ourselves. (not much) But we did all the work ourselves and learned how to key out green screen, manipulate images and edit for comedy. Unfortunately, we only made it through 2 episodes before the project was retired. At one point we did pitch the show to Comedy Central, but they weren’t looking for ensemble based comedy troupes. Below is a snippit of the pilot episode. Enjoy! USS Rock N Roll -Episode 0 -“Control Tower” from Leo Canneto on Vimeo.
I’m currently working on Mary Birdsong’s (Reno 911, The Descendants, Adventureland) new one woman show “3 Days in a Tub.” This is the second time she’s mounting the show in Los Angeles and I can tell you this show is excellent. She’s got a live band on stage with her and for 5 bucks you can’t beat this hilarious trip down memory lane about this one time when Mary’s mom spent 3 days in the tub. I’d love to see you at the show!
I helped Rich Fulcher make this promotional video for his new book Tiny Acts of Rebellion. A couple of guys from Boing Boing did all the shooting and it looks amazing. If you look closely you can see me in the video… and Phillip Mottaz‘s baby Henry.
